All the community sites affected? [some morons have ruined the community sites]

Yep, I feel the whole Facebook, Twitter, You tube and My Space phenomenon has been compromised … certainly for the foreseeable future.

Like all major Music Organisations, we have a strict rule of never following an unsolicited link … far too dangerous. We have been shut down twice in past few years with mighty viruses which are expensive and time consuming to sort out. They need expert attention … called Moviepaz and Movieland. Every attempt to remove them makes them reinvent themselves and mutate.

Now there is an even worse one. We were attacked this morning … and boy, did it frighten the pants off us.

It starts with a simple ‘Facebook’ looking email … we deleted it so I do not have the name of the Facebook person … “Is that really you in the video?” it asked … innocuous enough and enough to have us click on the link to check our Facebook entries.

What happened next was a blur … screen went to a video starting with a ‘tiger’ kitten grinning at us. Virus alerts flashed all over the place … but no mention of our main, powerful protection – which is vital to our existence . “23 viruses found” it said … click here to download protection … this went on and on … no matter how we tried to stop the windows … by the way, they were authentic copies of a ‘Windows, Microsoft’ window. We checked the detail on another separate computer and this came up:

<<<Cyber Security is successor of the annoying rogue security systems such Total Security and System Security. It’s glittering user interface and advertising can catch you off guard as if it is a legit system protection software. It is most commonly installed by Trojans and is being heavily advertised on fraudulent sites. The rogue company demands $59.99 for keeping the Cyber Security Tool but doesn’t provide any option to delete it.

It, as all rogue security systems do, reports imaginary threats and then demands paid version of the tool to delete them. It most probably also blocks the system restore and certain windows programs as well.>>>

By rigorously deleting the myriad of windows that appeared we eventually stopped the attack. We are now running a complete check of all systems. Thank Goodness we investigated before downloading their supposedly helpful tools.

NB: A full in depth scan found no infections … it is an annoying, time consuming, scam to make you part with money … beware. It is virtually impossible to pick up a virus from an Email but be desperately aware that when you are lured to a web-site … then you can be in big trouble …. That is why the Music Industry will not follow any links to any site … even to a supposed Facebook … you now know why!

A great new Q and A page launched [you will love this]

We have just uploaded a brand new music maker’s and songwriter’s Questions and Answers page in our newly formatted http://www.makehits.co.uk site …. Just check out http://www.makehits.co.uk/qanda25.htm

The Questions:

1) I am in the process of updating my small but modest studio.

2) I am asking please, for your opinion about all of the reasonableness of this...we do have a potential hit record here.

3) I can't seem to relocate that information in the books so please help me get the best out of any further recordings.

4) There is definitely something I am missing? Do you know what that something is???

5) Would you still do it or rather "follow your heart" and stick with your own favourite kind of music?

Four things you can't recover: [a nice bit of philosophy?]

The stone........after the throw.

The word........after it's said.

The occasion........after it's missed.

The time........after it's gone.

Jon Gomm just posted this on YouTube [amazing or what?]

Jon Gomm just posted this on YouTube, it’s an excellent music video, in fact, quite the most astonishing piece of playing I have ever seen … check out the last 1 minute … probably the worst criticism I have ever said about a music piece … the hit is in the first ten seconds and every music statement should be made in the first 1.30min.

This is an exception … the stuff in the last section is amazing.

Subscriber's Section [ recording deal question ]

“Hi Dec

My name is A******. I am a solo artist and I have been offered a deal

from a good record company here in Australia.

I recorded and mixed the album before I approached the rec company. They are pressing and

dist the album. An investor paid for half of all my recording, mixing

and musicians etc so that I had the opportunity to record a world

class album and not go broke. I have a deal with the investor 50%/50%

of all income from CD/download sales of the album etc- I am happy

with this.

MY QUESTION IS . . . . do I ask the record company to make

a deal between them and Investor and myself (as a partnership)

without them getting annoyed? OR . . will they insist on just signing

me and the investor and I have our own deal? I just wanted the

investor to feel secure etc

Anyway, I hope I’ve managed to explain myself clearly.

Thanks for any help.

Sincerely

A****** M********

A******

Well done!

But may I respectfully suggest that you have approached this in a not very professional way [food for thought for the future?]

<<<<<<<<<. I recorded and mixed the album before I approached the rec company>>>>>>>>

This is fraught with danger ... you could waste six months or a year of your life and a heap of money on a non-commercial product that would not sell.

The way we approach this is [the money making professional way]

1) Record 1 - 3 of your most commercial songs in rough mode ... check and test to find the most likely to make shed loads of money [our demo consultation service is probably the best professional tool http://www.makehits.co.uk/demo.htm ]

2) Spend a sensible amount recording the most commercial song with the best Hit Producer you can afford [any Hit producer worth his salt will produce a potential hit song for small expenses plus a percentage]

3) Approach suitable mainstream record companies with the finished song [which, in theory, is tried and tested and magnificently produced to Top Three standard]

This method is also used by top novelists ... they only write a sample chapter and a bullet pointed outline .... once they get the deal and the advance then they flesh out the book [fact! ... Jeffrey Archer is a good pal] I saw this successfully in action on Tuesday night.

<<<<<<<<. I have a deal with the investor 50%/50% of all income from CD/download sales of the album etc>>>>>>>>>>

That is a usual deal ... you should have your own publishing company in place [ "How to Start Your Own Publishing company for less than £100" ] and also get registered with the Australian version of PPL [Phonographic Performance Limited] ... this will ensure that you collect the correct royalties for your performance on the recordings when they are played on Radio, TV and in public places.

You are extremely lucky your investor is not clued up enough to realise that this is where the 'real' money is.

<<<<<<< do I ask the record company to make a deal between them and Investor and myself (as a partnership) without them getting annoyed?>>>>>>>>

Normally the record company will only deal with the principal performer [yourself] when they want a sole recording contract. In this present instance, it is complicated by the fact that you are acting as the 'production company' and leasing the product to them .... therefore you will want a leasing contract with them and a separate contract between yourself and the production company [again, yourself] as the principal performer.

I hope you have been sensible in paying the musicians, back singers, producer etc. in 'full and final settlement' for their services ... otherwise you can be hit by demands for royalties if it is a hit.

<<<<< will they insist on just signing me and the investor and I have our own deal?>>>>>>

The record company will not want to be involved in any side arrangement you have ... and I wouldn't even bother them with the detail.

Leasing contracts are available in our publishing manual [ "How to Start Your Own Publishing Company for less than £100" ]

I do hope you have every contract in place .... signed and duplicated .... you have no idea the number of guys who get themselves into huge trouble when the record starts to make money.

I have one maxim: "get every contract in place and signed before you switch the studio light on" .... a very wise idea..... you have been warned!

The gags: ..... [ Why do we speak English? ]

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies.

At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?"

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, "Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German."

You could have heard a pin drop.
